Transformation of agriculture hinges not just on what we grow, but how we move it, process it, brand it, and deliver value to consumers. This is where Value Chain Development (VCD) becomes critical.

Traditional agriculture has focused heavily on increasing production, but without corresponding attention to post-harvest handling, processing, supply chain and market integration, farmers remain vulnerable to low returns and high losses.

Value chain development offers a holistic approach by linking every node—from inputs, production, aggregation, and processing to marketing and consumption—under a coordinated strategy that ensures efficiency, inclusivity, and profitability.

For smallholder farmers, value chain development is not just about better prices—it’s about innovation, access to markets, financial services, and knowledge.

Well developed value chain ensures that agriculture is treated not just as production, but as a competitive business ecosystem. When each actor in the chain—from farmer to consumer—is empowered, connected, and informed, agriculture can become a resilient driver of inclusive economic growth.
